We direct music video treatments

Treatments

Treatment 1 - https://www.wedirectmusicvideos.com/individual-treatments/2019/11/20/lsd-no-new-friends-ft-labrinth-sia-diplo

This treatment is for the song No New Friends by Diplo is presented in a powerpoint style with each slide containing different information about what they want the video to be about. As we immediately open the presentation, the title page is this bright, colourful image with the 'LSD' branding (Lsd is album) on. The next page is the first page containing actual information for the reader. This page is a summary of what the director invisions the video to be like. He talks about where he takes his inspiration from, how he wants the art to be and his inspiration for the art style.

After the the title and intro slide the presentation then goes on to follow a chronological explanation of each section of the song and what happens in the corresponding section of the video. It describes what the director invisions in a as simple way as possible.

Each of these sections is accompanied with images to help the reader visualise the idea that is being written about. Most pages come across as half mood board and half text which is really effective at getting the directors ideas across and works really well. The images back up the text by guiding peopls thoughts.

Treatment 2 - https://www.wedirectmusicvideos.com/individual-treatments/2019/8/5/portugal-the-man-feel-it-still-directed-by-ian-schwartz-amp-fourclops

This treatment is for feel it still by Portugal. The man. In comparison to treatment one this treatment, right from the outset obviously takes a different approach to a powerpoint. After you get past the title slide you are presented with a blank page on with nothing other than a wall of text. This text is explaining the concept to the reader, but with no imagery to back it up, almost allowing the reader to explore their own ideas. This page is followed by one that looks very similar but this time is talking about the structure of the video.

As we go on through the powerpoint from this point we get heading slides, which contain some sort of imagery to fit with the heading, then the information is found on the following page. This flows on from the structure section nicely as in that section it talks about what settings and environments are used and when. These pages talk about these setting and what happens in them. Each setting also comes with a page that is a mood board to help direct the reader's mind to be on track with the writers.

This music video also has an interactive video version that comes along with it, in this section they have made stills and a storyboard to help explain this. I think the use of the storyboard is a fantastic idea as it confirms the readers ideas of the order of events and just how they will occur. With an interactive video the storyboard shows the less easy to picture 'interactive segments'.

Treatment 3 - https://www.wedirectmusicvideos.com/individual-treatments/2019/7/3/young-thug-wyclef-jean-directed-by-ryan-staake

This treatment is for a very different music video. As soon as you get onto the the first page of the presentation there is an explanation written out on top of a load of images from footage which they already shot. It explains how they already tried to shoot a video but it did not go to plan, so now they have pieces of video and want to make a video with the unfortunate event.

As you go through this treatment they include lots of stills with an explanation of the still on top. It carries an almost comedic effect to it because it is telling the reader what they initially
intended and wanted to have but in reality it is not what they ended up with.

Near the bottom of the page/presentation they wrote about how the media would pick pick up on the 'unusual' music video. They even went onto design a mockup article for a well known media company. I think this is a very effective idea at selling the music video as to some people the more attention it gets is a win.

Top three tips for a successful treatment

1. Include lots of Images.

When reading through the treatments above, it was easy to notice that all of them contained imagery in some shape or form. I think this is because images help show the idea that has been had and without them the readers mind might explore their own ideas, however in the case of a music video this is not what you want.

2. Chronological Explanation

From reading the treatments above, I found the music videos most easy to visualise when the treatment was written in chronological order with the song as it involves less jumping around for my brain to comprehend.

3. Don't include walls of text

In the second treatment I read, I found myself reading large walls of text which made me lose interest quickly. Large walls of text, especially with no images, are not captivating or gripping.
